The Montana youth suicide rate has increased steadily for over a decade and is now 4.5 times the national rate. A promising solution is universal digital screening for suicide risk coupled with mental health care initiated in school settings. Universal screening reduces a significant barrier to suicide prevention: identifying at-risk youth.
Once identified, they can be helped and suicide risk reduced.
Digital screening is an optimal suicide prevention tool. It allows inexpensive universal rapid screening and immediate identification and care of at-risk youth. Adolescents (and adults) are more likely to divulge suicidal thoughts and behaviors in a self-report digital assessment than face-to-face with a clinician. High-risk students receive same-day care provided by school-based or mental health therapists contracted by Rural Behavioral Health Institute.

In Montana, once a school decides to implement SLTC, the Rural Behavioral Health Institute (RBHI) team shares models to help the school decide what will work best for them. The RBHI team shares information about the screening process, answers school stakeholder questions, and works closely to schedule dates and implement student screening. RBHI provides mental health professionals to see students needing same-day care, and helps students access appropriate aftercare.

After screening, schools receive analyses showing proportions of positive and negative student screens and other summary data. Rural Behavioral Health Institute (RBHI) also provides resources and educational guides. Once RBHI has screened a school, it remains involved to ensure students access care.
